Note: I changed the deadline for choosing a topic to Thursday, 26 September 1996.

You must choose a topic and submit a brief written description of the topic to the instructor for approval no later than class on 24 September 1996. You should choose the topic(s) for the annotated bibliography assignment and term paper as soon as possible.

This term paper should be submitted to the instructor by noon on 7 November 1996.

Description

• Choose an interesting topic related to the subject matter of this course. The topic you choose can be on any aspect of computing, but the focus should be on the professional, social, human, ethical, and/or legal issues and impacts. See the list of possible topics in the description of the annotated bibliography.

• No two class members may choose exactly the same topic. In case of a conflict, I will ask the students involved to refine their topics further.

• You may choose the same topic for this term paper as you do for the annotated bibliography.

• The term paper should be 10 to 15 pages in length. It should be singled-spaced, use a font no larger than 12 point, and have traditional 1-inch margins. The paper should include citations of appropriate articles, books, etc.; you may use either footnotes or endnotes.

• The report should be either produced on a word processor--with a pleasingly formatted paper copy submitted to the instructor or produced in HTML for possible display on the Word-Wide Web. In the latter case, you will have less control over the formatting.

• If you write an excellent paper, we will look for ways that it can be published.
